Product Classification by WTO Multilateral Trade Negotiation Categories

This dataset provides a concordance between 6-digit Harmonized System (HS) codes and the WTO Multilateral Trade Negotiation (MTN) product categories. Originally developed during the Tokyo Round of negotiations, the MTN classification divides products into distinct product groups to facilitate trade analysis and negotiations.

The classification system was subsequently revised and aligned with the Harmonized System nomenclature. In its current form, used in the World Tariff Profiles, the classification includes 22 product groups: the first ten groups cover the Agricultural sector, and the remaining twelve cover the Non-Agricultural sector; the product groups are further brokendown into sub-categories. The mapping of HS codes to product groups is updated with each new version of the HS nomenclature and published in the World Tariff Profiles.

The MTN product categories is available in all versions of the Harmonized System.
